Home improvement swindler gets 90 days in jail, fined $12,800

A Nebraska man who swindled two elderly east-metro residents out of thousands of dollars in a home improvement scam was sentenced Monday to 90 days in jail and ordered to pay $12,800 in restitution.

Letter from MHICA founder

Dear Readers,

I am Lawrence barris founder of Michigan Home Improvement Consumer advocates ( MHICA). I would like to share with you a few of my personal life experiences that served as the background and motivating force behind MHICA’s mission.
My professional resume consists of home improvement spanning 25 years in sales and property management. What I found was that most companies and contractors did not follow up with their promises and would often inflate their prices at the bottom level of cost of goods sold, as well as the retail level. At first I did not notice this discrepancy.

After I began my own total home renovation I saw a wide fluctuation in prices for proposed improvements. This education continued over the years as I expanded to additional rental homes that would need improvements and repairs. I experienced all the headaches much too common when running into even just one scrupulous or inept contractor. After a while you learn how to choose the right ones. Its time consuming and detailed, but when the work goes smooth and the price is right the creative process as well as the finished work is very rewarding.

As a lifelong Jazz musician and recording artist, I was used to the challenge in the creative process. Whenever composing a musical piece or creating a home improvement you start with your idea and use your intuition. You check your concept with trusted and objective associates. In the end the composition is based on what feels right and meets its purpose.

It’s the same with MHICA. We maintain relationships with contractors who delivered what they promise and take pride in their work, while continuing to meet and evaluate others in their specific specialties whose work and prices are ethical.
MHICA is a program with a means to an end. It’s about making others feel comfortable in their creative process of composing their home improvement with success. In the end it should feel right and become your number on hit.

Michigan's spending on weatherization is expected to accelerate soon, with enough money for work on about 36,000 to 38,000 homes in the state. Federal tax credits have also made it more attractive for all homeowners, not just low-income ones, to add insulation and more energy-efficient windows, doors and furnaces, among other things. The credits cover 30 percent of the cost of these and other energy-conservation improvements that are installed this year and in 2010.
